6INIT overview

6INIT was the first EC IPv6 project, running from January 2000 to April 2001.

The main objective of the 6INIT project was to promote the introduction of IPv6 network supporting multimedia services with QoS and security in Europe. The project furthermore provided guidelines on how to setup an operational platform providing end users with native IPv6 access points and services.
The 6INIT Platform and Infrastructure was based on a three-level hierarchical approach for establishing the native IPv6 6INIT network between all project participants. This network structure was based on a separation of the 6INIT project partners into 5 regional clusters (UK, French, Scandinavian, Greek, German Cluster) which were interconnected by native IPv6 over ATM links (mainly using the TEN 155 network). These IPv6 connections formed the 6INIT backbone and the top-level of the network structure.

The IPv6 connections between the partners within regional clusters were realised using varying techniques (IPv6 over ATM, IPv6 over ISDN, IPv6 in IPv4 tunnels). These intra-cluster connections implemented the second level of 6INIT’s network architecture hierarchy.

The third and last level of the 6INIT network architecture corresponded to local networks at the participant’s site implemented in very different ways according to the requirements each partner had with respect to the 6INIT trials.
